Norman Cross, Peterborough.
Norman Cross is a very well known part of Peterborough. During the 18th century a prisoner of war camp was situated there. POWs that died at the camp were buried around the site and still remain there today. Peterborough Museum has a display of items that were crafted by some of the POWs.
In actual fact, it seems that it wasn't a POW camp at Norman Cross but a 'Depot'. It was the first in the country for the prisoners of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars 1797 -1815. The second 'depot' was situated at Dartmoor. An interesting fact about the Norman Cross depot was that wood from there was used to build cottages on St. Leonards Street. Unfortunately, the cottages were demolished to make way for Queensgate car park during the early 1980s.

Kenning's Filling Station photographed sometime during the 1950s. We have been informed that Kenning's was built on the site of the Crossroads garage. Further information about this would be appreciated.
