Wansford, Peterborough - Miscellaneous Photographs

The freshly laid A1, Wansford Bypass. The turn into Wansford is to the left in the middle of the photograph. Date unknown.

Same stretch of road, but a little more built up with the arrival of a new pub and some housing. Mr. Dennis Thompson is pictured on his father's motorbike. Photograph taken sometime during 1957.

Another photograph of the same stretch of road taken during 1957. The art deco style building in the background is the Mermaide Pub, see the photograph below to view how the pub looks today.

A friend of mine recently took part in a photoshoot of his car for 'Fast Car' magazine. I was unaware of the location until I viewed the photographs then I recognised the building in the background. It's the old Mermaide Pub which was more recently a Little Chef restaurant. As you can see, the building is in a bit of state and looks like it could end up being demolished. Photograph taken 18th October 2007.

Another view of the Mermaide Pub/Little Chef being used as a location for a car photoshoot. The A1 can be seen in the background. Photograph taken 18th October 2007.

This photograph is dated 19th July, 1925 and was taken during the Oak Tandem 100 bicycle race. The Paper Mills pub can be seen in the background.

Another shot of the Oak Tandem race taken on the same day.

The building in the background is now what is known as The Haycock Hotel. The current owners of the Haycock have a wonderful website that has a very interesting page on the history of the building - www.thehaycock.co.uk

The garage on the left hand side is Colliers. The sign also reads Automobile Engineers and Agents, Tyre Stockists.
