Bridge Street, Peterborough City Centre

Bridge Street is another part of Peterborough that is rich in history. Many retailers have come and gone over the years. Narrow Bridge Street was widened during the early part of the last century, many shops and other buildings were demolished and a new Town Hall was built in their place.

Woolworths

Narrow Bridge Street photographed July 1923 during the visit of the Prince of Wales. The buildings on the left were demolished a few years later to widen the road. The present Town Hall was built to the left of the demolished site. The building on the right was a bank and in fact still is. It is now a HSBC bank, previously Midland Bank.

Bridge Street photographed early 1970s. Even though this road has been pedestrianized and the Rivergate shopping complex has been built in this area, most of these buildings still stand today as seen in the photograph below.
